Abstract

In a language, word-formation processes are treated as vital means of creating new linguistic expression whenever needed. In the Assamese language also, a number of word-formation processes were employed or involved in the formation of a large number of existing words and their usage are continued to form new expressions time to time. However, not all the processes are equally and actively involved in producing new words. Again, the rate of usage may vary depending on the context or genre or due to many other reasons such as phonological, lexical, pragmatic etc. The processes which are used more frequently than others, or which are more active in word-formation than others are considered as more productive processes. Through this paper, the nature of productivity in Assamese word-formation processes has been discussed hinting various word-formation processes of the language.
