This article discusses the current trends in occupational employment. Economic growth, social changes, population growth and demographic changes, natural and environmental changes, and technological advances affect occupational employment by changing demand and supply conditions in the labor market. A task-based classification of jobs reveals that routine cognitive and routine manual jobs have experienced a decline due to automation, outsourcing, and offshoring of routine tasks. Furthermore, while technology-enabled innovations and industrialization strategies, such as operations shifting and self-service, process redesign and new services, new market mechanisms and exchanges, the ‘gig’ and freelance economy, and sharing economy, have destroyed certain occupations, they have created new occupations as well. However, what will be the overall impacts on occupational employment is not clear.
